Helena and Miley listened as they stood in the small circle of their now acquaintances. Helena in particular watched the faces of this Cassidy, and her apparent guardian Marin. For a moment she wondered what it was all about, this man going after a senator's daughter, and realized she would not have time to ask for some time hence, when they still stood in the doorway that lead to ruin, and they needed to survive.

That would be the first goal, and Helena focused on it now with all her might, for her parents, for her best friend. And so Marin's suggestion was somewhat reluctantly agreed to my Helena with a focused nod when he spoke, feeling a glimmer of hope, now that they had a plan. The bangining on that door was an unwelcome start that caused Miley to yelp, and Helena to snatch up her hand again. Running at any moment was an absolute possibility. Like Marin, Helena's eyes narrowed in concern at the claim the police were on the other side of that barricaded door. It didn't make sense the police would bother with a random club, if whole of New York City was being overrun.

When he yelled, she stuck two fingers in her mouth and whistled as loud as she was able, a shrill, piercing sound that would hopefully startle those naive souls to a halt.

" Do not touch that door!" She hollered amongst a likely growing din of confusion. Her grip tightened on her friends hand, anticipating the worst.

“That’d be pretty neat, you know, addressing issues instead of sticking our fingers in our ears and going 'lalala, everything is fine! Let's not worry too much'.” She blinked those big gray eyes of hers looking at the frenchmen. When he came for the cigarette, she allowed him to snag it.

When it was returned to her she looked down at it… pondering for a second. The guy seemed on the level, but, she wasn’t entirely sure how this shit was spread. Was that being too cautious? It was hard to say wasn’t it. She looked at it for just a bit longer. She figured if he was actually one of those things, and… he wanted to changed her, he’d do it a bit rougher than saliva on a cigarette. If that was even how this stuff moved from person to person, it probably took more.

She did finally take another drag before all hell broke loose.

That little voice in her head just ‘LIGHT THE FUSE’ but, she did her best to struggle forward to get closer to the chaos.

“Don’t be dumb! We’re safe-ish now, but, you open that door everything changes. We don’t know if those are cops, and even if they are… if they’ll help us. Please, just… wait for morning. Please, it’s the only way to be safe.”

One of the throng pushed the door, just enough as the others recoiled at the combined commands of Marin, Cassidy, and Helena. It was enough, just enough, and a gloved hand holding a revolver, that great symbol of American justice, was just barely able to breach the gap. Marin, who had been first to react, had placed himself unwittingly in the way, and the discharged shot deafened the quiet club, tearing through the air like a bolt of thunder.

The bullet penetrated Marin's shoulder and threw him to the ground, though not before he could release his own means of retaliation: what could only be described as a fireball was flung from his hand like a fastball at a Yankee's game, and found its mark with almost unerring accuracy through the small opening the "officer" had made. It was a once in a lifetime shot, though Marin perhaps would insist later that he regularly bullseyed wamp rats in his T-16 back at home.

Those by the door were able to close it as the armed arm quickly pulled its way back within, though the closure did nothing to dull the aftermath of Marin's retribution: first the screams, then the smell, then the heat. It quickly became apparent that they were no longer safe, if in fact they ever were. Blood welled up in Marin's wound, and he hadn't moved since his inhuman feat. Careful inspection would note that he was not only bleeding from the shoulder, but from his nose as well, though he had clearly landed hard on his back and hadn't suffered any obvious blow to the face.

Smoke poured through the underside of the door and it appeared that Marin was indisposed, possibly even unconscious. The club was no longer safe, if in fact it ever was, and it was obvious that if the fire did not spread and immolate that the smoke would do a less dramatic yet still equivalent result. They had to get out of there. But how? And what would they do with the man that summoned fire from his hand, so obsessed initially with Cassidy and now a potential liability?

There was something specific about the concussion of gunfire, the pulse that came with as a small explosion sent projectiles through the air faster than the eye could see. It had come after that held breath, the loud clap of the shot passing before Helena could rightly register it. When her senses caught up,Helena and Miley had crouched on the floor a reflex response Helena had learned due to how many times she had heard, created herself, that chest rattling, thump of a sound.

Then there was the reality she found with her eyes, seeing the red of blood seeping into Marin's suit jacket at the shoulder, as Miley panicked, covered her ears with her hands, and pressed her eyes closed. Concern crossed the collegic marksman's face, before her features widened in confused shock at a fireball emanating from his palm with what seemed no warning. She would stare wide eyed at him for a moment, the screaming from the other side of the door filtering in through the gummed up gears of her mind, eventually pulling her eyes from him, and back to the task of now fleeing.

The smoke that began to flood in under the door, along with the growing orange glow of fire... their ability to hide was coming quickly to an end. Helena's eyes flashed about, remembering that side exit they had barred that led out into the alley. She stood, pulling Miley up with her, as she took stock of the situation, and mulled their choices. They were narrowing by the moment. Action would come with risk, but it would be better than burning alive.

" We have to try for the alley..." Her stomach turned, thinking of what came with that choice. She crouched next Marin so he could hear" The stampede will be chaotic... but it might just keep us alive long enough to make a clean break for it." Not once, did she let go of Miley's hand, and once again stood.

Cassidy was for the most part, trying to keep it together through all this. Stiff upper lip and all that, but, truth be told… she was out of her element. Nothing she ever did really had any stakes, school, social life, even her… rebellion, well, was all safe, thanks to the protection her station afforded her. Now her life was on the line, and it was quite a lot for the young woman to manage.

The chaos of it all, it made her want to cry out for help. It was childish, but what else could she do? She wasn’t equipped for any of this, not really. Her heart was pounding heavily in her chest, she could hear it. Her stomach twisted, and the world seemed to be moving in slow motion.

When the man released a burst of flame from her hand, her mouth went wide. When he ended up in a bit of a crumpled heap, the girl pushed her way through the crowd. He was her best hope right? Why had she played with him earlier? She could have been somewhere else! Anywhere else, if she had just left when she was told.

So, she did what at the time seemed like her best bet, she went to the wounded man and shook him not particularly gently. Even as the other woman spoke.

“Come, come on, like, totally don’t be to fucked up to move. I’m sorry I fucked with you earlier, just… get up!”

Marin's eyes fluttered and then flashed open, and he was dazed for just a moment before his gaze hardened in recognition as it focused on Cassidy. He turned his head, taking quick stock of the situation, first the door, noting smoking already seeping within, the smell both of burning flesh and hair mingled with something more akin to rotten eggs. Then he took in the chaos, began struggling to his feet to and forcing his injured body to match the will of his mind. It was slow going, and the blood continued to drip from his nose, which he hastily wiped away with an errant back of the hand as he relied on Cassidy to help him to his feet.

He closed his eyes then, taking a large sigh as he inhaled, steeling his resolve. The only exit apart from the one that led to fire, smoke, and death was blocked, crushed closed before it could even be opened by the procession of bodies towards it. At least one of Helena's friends was in that throng, as some could no longer be accounted for when Helena looked. Miley at least kept close, though perhaps she would have had to have gnawed off her own hand to do otherwise.

At last, Marin sprung forward, adrenaline and will compelling its broken vessel. Seizing a stool in the arm opposite where he was wounded, he lifted it and hurled, causing a loud crash of broken glass as the makeshift exit gave way. He had had to act quickly; he knew now that saving any besides Helena and Cassidy was not only detrimental to his mission, but now quite impossible. Terror had clouded judgment completely, and he hoped that at the very least they would draw some attention away from the shattering noise he had caused with their reckless pounding efforts to escape.

"Quickly!" he exclaimed without looking at either one, his hand now pressing against his shoulder wound and he braved his way into the safety and peril of the night.

Chaos began to spread as in the periphery of Helena's vision, Marin rose unevenly to his feet. The screams of panic at the sight of fire would grow exponentially, leading to their efforts being literally crushed underfoot, if they were to fall, and be trampled beneath the feet of the crowd. The streaks of cell phone light danced wildly now in the dark, helped along the smoke filling the air as Helena gripped Miley's hand like a vice, prepared to pull her up off the floor when the flood through the door began, like the breaking of a dam. When the crashing of that stool was the signal to act, and so the young woman did so.

She pushed forward with Miley in tow, her eyes wild and focused as she used her free hand to yank the table free from where she and the DJ had just wedged it. The
noise of the clattering speakers and stage gear drew the frightened and desperate like rats on a sinking ship, and as the door was fully revealed both Helena and Miley were smashed against it, a wild tangle of frantic bodies, hands and fingertips reaching for the lever press on the door. Helena, in a blur of adrenaline and the desperate cries of the people around her, heard Miley scream her name, the grip on her hand beginning to slip with the heat and sweat that came with bing in such a tightly packed throng of lemmings.

With a vicious, determined growl Helena was able to lift her hand enough to trip the latch. It was a teather snapped, and suddenly the barrier gave way to night air, and she stumbled out with Miley into the night, roiling to the ground, and thankfully far enough to be against the wall opposite as a horde flooded out, and she watched as multiple of her roommates passed, tripping and trying to run in a river not flowing fast enough. With a great push she pulled herself up again, grabbing Miley by the arms to lift her and get her moving with the current.

Awareness of if they were still under threat, and how many hunted them, was impossible to tell in the chaos. As they moved Helena's eyes turned back, bright raspberry red hair in her eyes, searching for their comrades in the throes.

This wasn’t how she thought her night was going to go. She imagined booze, possibly some good quality drugs of some sort, and well, seeing where things went from there. Yet, here she was… the club, no, the city? Or… was it the world was in complete chaos. And a man who could shoo fireballs from his hands had come looking for her, her in specific. It all sounded like some sort of fevered dream when it came down to it, but, really, she couldn’t dwell on anything like that right now could she?

She had to figure out the whole survival thing, which meant, she’d latch onto the wizard and hope that he was able to bring her to safety. She wasn’t proud of this strategy admittedly, but, what could she do?

These were the kind of thoughts ripping through her head, as she did her best to try to ignore that her family was probably in serious danger, and if she started to dwell on that things would likely really start to fall apart.

Fortunately, she didn’t have very long to think about anything as the snooty frenchman sprang into action, she almost recoiled against the sound, but, she took a deep breath and gathered what resolve that she had.

She moved with the small group as quick as she could, making sure she remained as close to Marin as possible, without quite being on top of him. Her hands shook, but, somewhere in the back of her mind… she was excited.

At last, they had escaped the confines of what had become a deathtrap, making their way into the cool night air. Immediately outside, there was what could only be described as a desiccated husk that had once been Helena's friend. Clothing torn down the center and parted along with flesh like cutting through the middle of a slab of beef, the body was pale and utterly devoid of blood. Exposed organs were likewise shriveled like prunes, some cast aside haphazardly, others still clinging roughly to the position they had in life. The culprit, the monster they had seen previously, was nowhere to be found. Perhaps it had fed enough. Helena, in her push towards the front of the crowd, was likewise pushed by them from behind, such that she was only able to see the remains of her friend for just long enough to recognize what it was before she was forced to trample over it or be trampled by the onrush behind her.

The alley opened to the main street, which is where the masses pressed forward, towards where the carpark was, towards where many surely hoped was an unlikely salvation. To the right of the exit however, was an alley. Narrower, it was unclear where it led, unclear even if it could be an exit. Marin was nowhere in sight, but drippings of red across the ground, unlikely to have come from the macabre remnants of feeding, traced a path in the direction of that alley. Miley nudged Helena, causing her to look down that alley and see a stock still, impatient Marin, forefinger to his lips when they made eye contact. Now he could not make loud, imperious directives; they had to stay away from the crowd, and keeping quiet was essential.

Chaos in the Alley; It was a fitting band name, or title of a book perhaps. Helena would perhaps remember this fleeting thought when a moment of peace came, and she would laugh at it. In the moment however, she had just tripped over her prior friend's utterly mutilated corpse.

Through the blur of fleeing she had seen the vague shape of the torn open body cavity, the shapes of organs, the empty, horrified expression, gory stump where here head had once been. Despite it being only a flash of a sight, it was enough to absolutely terrify her, and she swallowed the horror down, another fresh branding on her brain, to be fully reckoned with when she could say she had survived.

With a great force of will she kept herself together, never forgetting her friend Miles close behind. Helena's eyes darted about as the scuffling and smattering of terrified screams of the crowd continued. Her sight caught on a splattering of blood on the ground not associated with anyone, and with a hard pull Helena led Miles against the current along the wall, following the trail into the utterly pitch black, highlighted only by the glimmering remnant of light that highlighted Marin's face.

In a split second Helena registered his body language and what it conveyed, and in the next split second she knew Miley would not be able to resist asking why, out loud. Her extroversion was just prone to asking, and with an uncharacteristic amount of force and aggression, Helena spun, placing a hand hard over Miley's mouth, just as her best friend had begun to take in air to fulfill Helena's prediction.

Miley's eyes became confused and a bit angry, and Helena embraced her, keeping her still, quiet as she was made to stare into the dark, while Helena watched the crowd disperse from the alleyway. Some fell, some pushed others down, some cursed aloud as they rounded the corner and disappeared from sight into the street. All sprinted like antelope chased by lions. When quiet came again, Helena waited, watched Marin for his next directive as an unknown beast continued to lurk somewhere unseen.
